13 Illegal miners behind bars in Lilongwe

Police in Kanengo on 13th November arrested thirteen (13) illegal miners from Chiwamba in Traditional Authority Chimutu in Lilongwe.

According to Kanengo Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Salomy Zgambo, the arrest has come after police on 30th October warned people from Chiwamba who were mining illegally in Lundu and Kumayani villages about the dangers of illegal mining.

During sensitization, Chiwamba residents were reminded that illegal mining was not acceptable in mining act as well as the laws of Malawi.

Police went as far as warning them that the holes left during mining can also be death traps for them citing example of Dedza incident.

Despite being told about the consequences of illegal mining, the people paid a deaf ear and continued with their dirty act hence police came in and arrested them.

The mineral that is being mined at Chiwamba is gold.

Among the 13 (thirteen) arrested miners, 3 (three) are females while 10 (ten) are males.

The suspects are currently at Kanengo police and will soon appear in court to answer charges of illegal mining contrary  to section 103 sub section 4 of the mining act.
