Barely one week after Malawi was engulfed with a sorrow mood after a 26-year-old Lilongwe - based Malawian Man Riad Randeri died and buried in Brazil on a suspected drug mission, Police at Chileka International Airport on 14th May arrested Velian Duwa after being found in possession of suspected illicit drug (Ephedrine).
According to KIA branch Public Relations Officer Sergeant Sapulain Chitonde, the suspect (Duwa) was coming from India via Addis-Ababa (Ethiopia) to Chileka International Airport on Ethiopian Airlines.
While in the arrivals hall, and during Police search, Officers manning the lounge demanded to check the contents of her two bags.
“During the search, officers found Motor Vehicle Head Gaskets in her both bags and they further demanded to break one Gasket as they were suspicious of her carrying some unacceptable things.
After breaking one Gasket, whitish looking substances were found concealed in it.
Immediately the suspect (Velian) was arrested and has since been charged with two counts of found in possession of suspected illicit drug (Ephedrine) without permission from the Minister and Illegal Importation of the suspected dangerous drug (Ephedrine),” Chitonde explained.
Meanwhile, Duwa is in Police custody at Chileka Police station and will appear before court once police investigations are over.
Velian Duwa (a business lady) aged 34 comes from village Kankhani in the Area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kamenyagwaza in Dedza District and holds a Malawian passport number MA849984 .
Officer In-charge Chileka International Airport Police has since warned the general public to refrain from dealing in dangerous drugs saying Malawi will never give them a red carpet and the long arm of the law is going to catch them.
