Legislator for Kasungu-West Alex Major has faulted the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) decision to use national identity cards in voter registration process for the 2019 general elections.
The Member of Parliament raised the concerns during his contribution to the State of the Nation Address delivered in the chamber by President Peter Mutharika last Friday.
However, the electoral body has assured citizens who do not have such an identity card that they will be allowed to register as National Registration Bureau officials will be present at MEC centers to help individuals have a national ID once voter registration commences.
But speaking in Parliament, the Kasungu-West Legislator said the measure could put off some electorates.
According to Major, at the moment, many people have not collected their national IDs.
He called on the electoral body to come up with tangible solution to the issue at hand.
