The National Assembly on Wednesday suspended the National Intelligence Services Bill following disagreements between government and opposition Legislators.
The Bill has been suspended during Committee Stage after presentation of a joint Parliamentary Committee of the Legal Affairs and Defense and Security report on the Bill.
Presenting the report, Chairperson of the Legal Affairs Committee Maxwell Thyolera recommended that an official appointed as national intelligence Chief should not be a politician to avoid compromising operations of the office.
Thyolera said in the past, the National Intelligence Service has not been independent due to political influence.
Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu said the joint-committee’s recommendation for an office bearer not to be a politician is unjustifiable.
The committee stage will resume after meeting between involved parties.
