Need for more trained special needs teachers, says PODCAM

The Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi—PODCAM, an organization that fights for the rights of children with disabilities has pleaded with government to put much resources towards the training of special needs teachers.

PODCAM Executive Director Miriam Namanja said unless government invests more in special needs teachers, efforts to enhance quality education among children with disabilities will remain a nightmare.

She said at the moment Malawi is running short of special needs teachers, a development which is heavily affecting children with disability’s access to quality education.

Namanja said since also asked government to fast track the construction of the much awaited special needs teachers training college in Lilongwe.

Malawi needs about two thousand special needs teachers to reach to more children with disabilities.
