Ombudsman institutions urged to operate within constitutional mandate

By Ian Soko

Ombudsman institutions in Africa have been urged to operate within the confines of their constitutional mandate in ensuring efficiency in the public sector.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu made the remarks on Monday in Lilongwe during the opening ceremony of a five-day regional training on the role of Ombudsman institutions in promoting and enforcing accountability, ethics and transparency in the public sector.

Tembenu said interference in other government institutions’ mandates is a detractive force to dealing with maladministration.

The Minister however hailed African Ombudsman agencies for rebranding in the democratic system by switching from the largely concentrating on addressing individual complaints to tackling bureaucratic injustices.

Tembenu challenged Ombudsman institutions to advise citizens and ensure policy holders are accountable and transparent in the implementation process.
