Malawi has registered over One Hundred Thousand children in the Birth registration and certification exercise currently underway.
The exercise which was launched in 2015 has attracted mixed reactions from stakeholders at the time when the responsible body, the National Registration Bureau—NRB is also undertaking the National Identity Cards registration exercise.
While some say the bureau has switched its focus to the national ID exercise, the Bureau says the two exercises are running concurrently.
Speaking to Newsline in an interview NRB Spokesperson Norman Fulatira maintains that birth registration and certification exercise offers a guarantee to full protection of children’s rights and those exposed to child labor, trafficking and abuses.
Meanwhile, Fulatira says at the moment the exercise is targeting new births and anticipates all children to get registered by 2018.
