The first grade magistrate’s court in Ntcheu has convicted and sentenced a police officer and his two accomplices to eight years each, imprisonment with hard labor for attempted robbery.
The court heard that on 8th march this year; members of the community arrested the police officer Constable Raphael Banda and his accomplices at Ntonda trading centre for attempted robbery.
Constable Raphael Banda and his two accomplices pleaded not guilty to the charge, but were convicted after the state paraded three witnesses.
In submission, the state asked the court to hand the convicts’ custodial sentence, saying they are a threat to society.
In mitigation, Raphael Banda pleaded with the court for leniency saying he has a huge responsibility, he looks after fifteen children and his accomplices also asked for leniency.
But Ntcheu first grade magistrate Crispin Sachulika concurred with the state, saying that Raphael Banda being a police officer has dented the image of the Malawi police service.
He then slapped the three convicts with a custodial sentence to deter other would be offenders.
Constable Raphael Banda 36 who has been in Malawi police service for eight years hails from Mkalawile village, traditional authority sitola, machinga in district.
His accomplices, chipiliro wanderford 25, hails from m’bweza village, traditional authority phambala and zacharia wyson 24, is from Ben chinseu village, traditional authority kwataine, both from Ntcheu district.
