Speaker Nsowoya Pressed by Opposition

Opposition members of parliament on Monday pressed Speaker of the National Richard Msowoya to declare the post of leader of house vacant.

The opposition legislators made the request following the suspension of Dr George Chaponda as Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and water by the Mzuzu High court.

Standing on point of Salima North West legislator Jessie Kabwira pressed the speaker to explain why he kept referring Dr George chaponda as leader of the house when records are indicating that he is still on suspension over maize gate scandal.

However Msowoya, said as speaker he is yet to be served with the court on the matter.

Chaponda who was not present in the house on Monday was represented by Kondwani Nankhumwa who is deputy leader of house in parliament.

The National Assembly has reconvened for the Mid-Term Budget Review Meeting.

The major item on the agenda of the Meeting would be to review the One point Two Trillion Kwacha 2016/2017 National Budget the House passed in June last year.

Members of Parliament are also expected to debate Bills that were not presented in the National Assembly in the last meeting.

The Opposition has also promised to take government to task on issues to deal with the maize procurement scandal, corruption and salaries of civil servants among others.
