One of the country’s oil manufacturers, Sunseed Oil Company has refuted reports by communities around its plant that the company is failing to manage waste.
The company has come under pressure from some quarters within Lilongwe’s Kanengo area after concerns were raised about an alleged oil spillage.
But the company’s General Manager Manoj Kumar Vats dismissed the reports, saying the alleged waste products are rain water that fails to sink into the ground.
According to Vats, Lilongwe City Council is negligent in the management of the area’s drainage system.
Vats has told Newsline that Council officials have never gone to inspect the company despite several invitations, until recently when reports of an oil spillage emerged.
Meanwhile, the company says it is living up to its social responsibility obligation by empowering surrounding communities with various initiatives.
