Two convicted for abusing LDF in Nsanje

Nsanje Magistrate’s Court has convicted two men including a local chief to three years Imprisonment for abusing the Local Development Fund—LDF.

According to reports, the two, identified as Village Headman Alufandika and the Chairman of the Village Development Committee Rashid Mamani connived to include ghost workers on the list of villagers to work on a canal project from the Shire River to Tikondane Irrigation Scheme. 

The issue was pursued by the Anti-Corruption Bureau after receiving complaints which alleged that thirty people only were working on an LDF funded project which was supposed to be carried out by one hundred people while the other seventy were ghost workers. 

On all the three counts, they were sentenced to thirty six months imprisonment for misuse of public office, 18 months for uttering a false documents and twelve months for theft. 

The two convicts were taken to court where they were charged with uttering a false document, theft and misuse of office. 

A statement signed by senior public relations officer for the Anti- Corruption Bureau Egrita Ndala says the sentences are expected to run concurrently.
