The United Nations Population Fund-UNFPA has dismissed claims that it supports a program of coercive abortion.
UNFPA Country representative, Dan Odallo, was speaking at a briefing session in Lilongwe in response to claims that have led to the withdrawal of US funding to the body.
On third April US government announced it had withdrawn funding to the organization on claims that it was supporting management of coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization in China.
But addressing the media, Odallo described the reports as erroneous saying the organization focuses much on empowering young people and women to contribute to poverty reduction and development.
He said for the past forty years UNFPA has provided family planning and saved tens of thousands of mothers from preventable deaths and disabilities.
