There are fears number of street connected children may rise as 12 under aged girls got pregnant in the streets of Lilongwe.

The girls grew up in the streets and are reportedly living in the same streets while expecting for their babies.

Tikondane care for children, an organization working with street connected children has expressed worry over the issue and has asked for urgent support for the young girls who are below 18 years.

Social work coordinator for Tikondane, Bridget Chetama said Streets are not safe places for children as they lack basic needs for their well being.

On who the responsible fathers are, Chetama suspected that their male counterparts and indeed older men are responsible.

Chetama added that the girls end up being violated and exploited from street connected while searching for security from the hostile environments.
