Embattled evangelist Shepherd Bushiri has handed himself over to Malawi Police Service headquarters in Lilongwe along with wife Mary, days after escaping from South Africa where they are both facing multiple charges including fraud.
South Africa has issued an arrest warrant and an extradition request of the two Malawian nationals who jumped bail.
The daring escape of the Bushiris has left both Pretoria and Lilongwe puzzled how the fugitives left South Africa and entered Malawi.
In a statement, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera said the Bushiris have been taken into custody after Malawi Police Service received a warrant of arrest from Interpol.
Speaking to Timveni, Kadadzera said the couple will soon be taken before a court of law in Malawi after recording statements.
Meanwhile Bushiri’s lawyer Ntsako Baloyi told South Africa’s national broadcaster SABC on Wednesday that the Bushiris have handed themselves over to authorities because they believe in the law and want fair trial in South Africa.
