The Ministry of Health through the Public Health Institute of Malawi says administering of Cholera vaccine has proven to be effective in the fight against the disease.
Cholera surveillance officer Wiseman Chimwaza made the remarks in an interview with Timveni following a series of pilot stages.
Chimwaza described the pilot phases as successful hence the nationwide administration of the vaccine.
Chimwaza said, "The cholera vaccine can is two fold as it can be used as a preventive measure and it can also be used as a treatment.
" Whenever we have an outbreak, people can be given the vaccine as a control measure but in a case where there is no outbreak, the vaccine is used as a preventive measure."
He said the vaccine is being given to people above a year old to ensure efficiency.
The Ministry of Health rolled out the pilot of the cholera vaccine in 2015 in the districts of Phalombe, Zomba and Machinga.
