Some concerned teachers have called on its mother body Teachers Union of Malawi to call off the ongoing stay away by teachers as they demand risk allowances from the government.
The group’s chairperson Staffwell Chitukuta said this on Monday in Lilongwe during a press briefing.
"TUM should tell all teachers to report for work as they continue with negotiations with government on the matter," said Chitukuta
He said the stand-off is infringing on the rights of children to access quality education.
"Learners from public schools will not do well when they sit for the national exams under MANEB as their colleagues from private schools are in class," Chitukuta said.
according to the chairperson, the teachers’ mother body should appreciate that government has taken a step by responding to some requests they made through the ministry of education.
He however called on government to continue engaging with different stakeholders to improve the welfare of teachers in the country.
