CSOs COMMENDS NCIC MOVE TO SUSPEND CONTRACTOR ON MZUNI LIBRARY

By Kenson McCloud
Some civil society groups have commended the National Construction Industry Council for suspending construction of Mzuzu University library over the contactor’s failure to fulfil contractual agreements.
According to a memo seen by Timveni, the decision follows China State Construction Engineering Corporation’s failure to allocate 30% the work to a local sub-contractor as per the sub-contracting and joint ventures by foreign and Malawian construction firms’ order of 2014.
NCIC’s Stop Order means that all construction work on the site has to be suspended with immediate effect.
Reacting to the development, Centre for Mindset Change Executive Director, Philip Kamangira said, "It is of paramount importance for contractors to observe and respect all contractual obligations."
Kamangira further appealed to stakeholders to investigate and resolve the matter as soon as possible in order to map the way forward to avoid compromising provision of quality education at the institution.
