CSOs URGED TO INCREASE AWARENESS ON HUMAN RIGHTS

By staff Reporter

The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria in South Africa has urged civil society organisations in Malawi to help the government in increasing knowledge among the citizenry on human rights provisions enshrined in the constitution.

The programmes manager for the institution Bonolo Makhalo has told Timveni on the sidelines of a Pan-African Meeting held in the capital Lilongwe that most African countries are struggling to deliver equitable justice to the people due to knowledge gap on human right fundamentals.

Meanwhile the organisation in conjunction with Youth And Society (YAS) , with support from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung a Germany political foundation, has launched a Constitutional Literacy Booklet for Malawi to help people understand the Bill of Rights.

Makhalo said knowledgeable citizens are able to fight for their rights when faced with human rights violations hence the booklet.
