ECONOMIST TIPS GOVT AHEAD OF SADC SUMMIT

By Wilson Allan Phiri

An economic expert Professor Ben Kalua has tipped the Malawi government to make use of the forthcoming SADC heads of state summit to lobby for tax amendments on trade deals in the region.

Malawi will host the summit which is expected to run from 9th August to 18th August in Lilongwe.

Timveni understands 70% of the delegates will attend physically while others will attend virtually because of covid-19 pandemic.

"The forthcoming summit should offer the country an opportunity to bring on the table economic issues influenced by the SADC trade deals," said Kalua.

Kalua cites high tariffs on trade deals as some factors affecting economic flow of the country hence the need to call for amendments of the same.

The expert believes the summit will also help boost revenue collection through tourism.
