EXPERT CALLS FOR SWIFT ACTION ON MISAPPROPRIATED MONEY AT LOANS BOARD

By Kenson McCloud

One of the country’s education experts, Victor Chikoti, has urged government to work with urgency in bringing to book people who are suspected to have embezzled over MWK300 Million from the Loans Board.

This follows revelations that one of the country’s higher learning institutions requested a MWK10 Million  loan from the loans board in 2018, but the board issued an extra MWK280 Million amount which was returned by the institution. However, the two hundred and MWK 280 Million was never returned to the loan board’s account.

In an interview with Timveni, Chikoti said it is unfortunate that a lot of deserving young students are failing to access loans due to the greed of some duty bearers.

He added that the country risks missing out on youth contributions to national development due to high cases of drop outs especially in tertiary institutions.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information Gospel Kazako has said relevant stakeholders are currently working together to get to the bottom of the issue.
