GBV AGAINST MEN ON THE RISE

By Meclina Chirwa

The country has registered more than a thousand cases of abuse perpetrated against men over the first half of the year.

That is according to figures from the Malawi Police Service which show 1778 complaints were recorded between January and July.

Speaking to Timveni, Victim Support Unit Desk Officer Gift Likoswe urged "men to report any form of violence committed against them" .

Likoswe cited cultural and social related factors as being behind men’s lack of interest to break the silence when subjected to gender based violence.

He lamented that from January to July this year Malawi has registered 10,675 GBV cases compared with 11,311 cases recorded the same period in 2020.

From this year’s total GBV numbers, defilement cases account for 977 cases while 1769 were attributed to sexual violence against women.
