GVT URGED TO INVEST IN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

By Kenson McCloud

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace says huge investment and commitment from government is what Malawi needs to have a vibrant health care system.

The remarks come as the country is still grappling with the challenge of health tourism which favours the rich in accessing treatment abroad.

In an interview with Timveni , CCJP National Coordinator Boniface Chibwana said overdependence on donor aid and lack of commitment on the part of local authorities has further compounded the problem.

Chibwana stressed time is overdue for Malawi to build strong health system capable of providing specialized treatment locals look for elsewhere.

Chibwana said the country’s national budget needs to give more funds towards the health sector and to focus on development than consumption.

He added that on its part, CCJP has been engaging with government to put in place viable solutions to improve the country’s health care system.
