LAWYERS WORRY OVER RISE IN CASES OF CHILD ABONDNMENT

By Aamon Butao

Women Lawyers Association of Malawi has raised concern over rising cases of parents abandoning their children.

The Association’s President Tadala Muyaya said this in an interview with Timveni.

Muyaya said many cases of child abandonment involve men.

She explained that it is worrisome that the country is recording high cases of children being abandoned.

Recently, some women raised concern that men are running away from their families that have children with disability.

According to Muyaya, most complaints revolve around men withholding assistance for child care.

"Even in cases of divorce, the law requires both parents to provide total support to their children,"  explained Muyaya.

On this note, Muyaya said misunderstandings between parents should never impact children’s welfare.

On its part, Muyaya explained that the Women Lawyers Association of Malawi has been getting court orders for child maintenance to ensure parents raise children together despite differences.
