Lack of desks at Likwenu Primary School in Machinga has been attributed as the major challenge affecting young learners.

In an interview with Timveni, head teacher at the school Petro Chaguzika said the situation is dire as the school does not have desks from standard 1 up to Standard 5.

He said the issue has been reported on several occasions but nothing has been done.

He further said children fail to concentrate on their studies because they find it interesting to play in the mud during the rainy season while classes are in session.

Member of Parliament for the area, Bright Msaka, admitted that the issue of desks exists in every primary school in his constituency more especially in the junior classes.

He added that the issue needs to be addressed at national level.

Msaka then revealed he has taken up the issue with the Minister of Education.

According to president of Teachers Union of Malawi, Willy Malimba, lack of desks in primary schools is a major challenge which this country faces and government has not given positive feedback whenever engaged.
