MEC LECTURES POLITICAL PARTIES ON CONDUCTING RALLIES

By Chilenje Chilenje

In a move to deter political violence, the Malawi Electoral Commission has challenged political parties to coordinate when organizing rallies.

MEC Commissioner Richard Chapweteka said, "Being tolerant of each other amongst political parties is the clearest guarantee to having free, fair and credible elections."

Chapweteka expressed concern that the political violence that has dominated Malawi’s politics has been deeply rooted in clashing of political events.

"Political parties must all live by a code to always keep other stakeholders informed about holding of rallies in respective communities," said Chapweteka.

MEC is expected to hold by elections on June 29 in Nkhata Bay Central Constituency, Chikwembere ward in Blantyre and Lalanje ward in Nsanje district.
