MEC WORRIED WITH LOW TURN OUT IN VOTER REGISTRATION AND VERIFICATION EXCERCISES
By Chilenje Chilenje
Head of the country’s electoral body Justice Chifundo Kachale has expressed dismay with low turnout in the voter registration and verification exercises in Nsanje Lalanje ward ahead of the June 29 by-elections.
Kachale raised the concerned after inspecting some centres in the ward on Tuesday.
The Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson blamed the situation on lack of popularity of local government polls.
"MEC will soon conduct research to get to the root bottom of apathy in local government elections," said Kachale.
Meanwhile, out of Seventeen Thousand Five Hundred voters who registered in 2019, only Five Thousand Six Hundred have verified their names in readiness of the by-election in Nsanje Lalanje ward.
