MZIMBA FACES SHORTAGE OF CHILD PROTECTION OFFICERS

One of the country’s child rights activists Fred Nyondo says shortage of child protection officers in the country is backsliding efforts aimed at dealing with child abuse.
Nyondo said this in an interview with Timveni as some districts have few child protection officers.
Speaking to Timveni Nyondo cited an example of Mzimba district where he said in the area of paramount chief Mbelwa has only two child protection officers.
"The development is affecting the welfare of children as a lot of children cannot be reached due to the limited number of officers," said Nyondo.
He has therefore called on government to recruit more child protection officers to safeguard the lives many children in the country.
Nyondo said, " Child neglect and sexual abuse are some of the common abuses that children here in Mzimba are facing."
But he was quick to commend organizations that are working very hard in Mzimba district to make sure that children are protected.
