NGO-CCR CALLS FOR ETHICAL REPORTING ON CHILD ISSUES AS JOURNALISTS COMMEMORATE WPFD

By Wilson Allan Phiri

As Malawi joins the world in commemorating world Press Freedom Day, Non Governmental Organization Coalition on Children Rights (NGO-CCR) has called for ethical reporting on issues relating to children’s welfare.

In an interview with Timveni Online, the organisation’s chairperson Desmond Mhango said both formal and informal media platforms play a vital role in safeguarding and promoting children’s rights.

Mhango hinted that there are other platforms that do not protect the integrity of children citing they portray true image of children when telling their stories.

Mhango was quick to recognize the fundamental role journalists and partners play in uncovering issues that hamper the marginalized group.

Taking his turn, a Social and Governance commentator Victor Chipofya said there is need for independent media freedom in the country.

Chipofya stressed that political interference is affecting media freedom.

The day is being commemorated under the theme "journalism under didgital siege"
