NSANJE CSO NETWORK CAUTIONS GOVT AGAINST AWARDING RAILWAY CONTRACT TO CHINESE FIRM

By Chilenje Chilenje

A Civil Society Organization Network in Nsanje district has threatened to take unspecified action should government insists on effecting its decision to award a railway contract to a Chinese firm called China Railway 20 to habilitate the Bangula-Marka railway line.

In an interview with Timveni Online, Chairperson for the CSO Network, Mike Dansa, said Malawians in Nsanje district are dissatisfied with the quality of work the company is doing on the Nsanje-Marka railway project hence calling for immediate cancellation of the contract.

The reaction by the Nsanje CSOs on the contract, is coming barely few weeks after the executive director for Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives  (CDEDI), Sylvester Namiwa, also wrote the Minister of Transport, Jacob Hara, cautioning him against offering the contract to CR20 Company.

Government seeks to rehabilitate the 44 Kilometer  railway line to revive the Sena corridor that will connect Malawi with Mozambique.

The contact is worth MWK 68 Billion.

Meanwhile, government is yet to react on the concerns.
