Police in Lilongwe have strongly condemned an act of mob justice at Mphanda Primary School in Nkhoma, Lilongwe, where pupils assaulted and stoned to death a theft suspect before setting his body ablaze.
The incident happened on Monday, 21 November, in the area of Traditional Authority Chitekwere.
The deceased has been identified as Masautso Felison, 31, of Kadzidzi Village from Traditional Authority Mazengera in the district.
It is said that Felison was a prime suspect for the missing 13 plastic chairs, solar battery and power inverter among others at the school.
Inspector Hastings Chigalu told Timveni that the suspect was being taken to Nkhoma Police Unit after community members had arrested him when they passed the school.
"But when learners noticed that the person who stole the school property was being led to police, they hijacked the community members and started assaulting and stoning the suspect to death," said Chigalu.
Medical report revealed that Felison died due to severe head injuries.
