POLITICAL COMMENTATOR WANTS CHAKWERA TO “APOLOGIZE TO MALAWIANS”

By Franklin Mtambalika
Political commentator George Phiri has asked President Lazarus Chakwera to apologize to Malawians on behalf of government officials who looted Covid-19 response funds.
Speaking in Timveni’s 98 degrees program on Monday evening, Phiri said, "It is sad to learn that at least K1 Billion from the controversial K6.2 Billion covid-19 funds was left idle when Malawians lost lives due to shortage of medical supplies."
Phiri said as investigations are still underway to apprehend all suspects connected to the saga, Chakwera should issue an apology to bereaved families.
But reacting to the call, Minister of Information who is also government spokesperson Gospel Kazako said instead of pushing the blame on the president, the citizenry "should be grateful that Chakwera ordered a forensic audit be conducted."
The police have since arrested at least 31 suspects involved in the scandal.
