 CSOs CRY FOUL OVER EXCLUSION

By Aamon Butao

Some Civil Society Organizations have cried foul that the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in government failing to consult CSOs in its compilation of Malawi’s human rights record that was submitted to the United Nations.

The Universal Period Review report, which is carried every five years, aims at keeping track of countries’ human rights performance.

Speaking to Timveni, Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa said non-governmental organizations have also written their own report to the UN on how Malawi is fairing on human rights.

Government sent Malawi’s report two months ago which is expected to be reviewed this coming November in Geneva, Switzerland.

Over forty countries are expected to be reviewed this year and Malawi was last assed in 2015.
