By Chilenje Chilenje

Deputy Minister of Lands Abida Mia has urged state security agencies to intensify border patrols to help curb trafficking of girls.

The call follows a rise in number of girls and young women from the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa district that are trafficked to neighboring Mozambique.

Speaking to Timveni, Abida Mia said it is saddening that Malawi is becoming a trafficking hub and a transit country.

Among other, Mia said people traffickers often entice vulnerable young women with promises of employment only to sexually exploit them.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, who is Plan International Ambassador, has pledged to lobby various partners to find ways of addressing challenges affecting adolescent girls in Chikwawa district.
