TEACHERS BODY TO UPROOT BAD APPLES FROM PROFESSION

By Aamon Butao

The Teachers Union of Malawi has vowed to protect its reputation and is urging government to issue tougher punishment to teachers who commit sexual abuse against students.

TUM President Willy Malimba has told Timveni last year saw teachers’ image soiled by increased cases of sexual abuse perpetrated by some bad apples in the teaching profession.

Malimba said the development is disgraceful taking into account teachers are considered as guardians of children.

On this note Malimba said government should come up with stiff measures to root out the vice.

Malimba called upon teachers to respect rights of students.

Over the years, teachers found guilty of sexually abusing students have been receiving soft disciplinary action with transfers taking centre stage.
