THOUSANDS OF MALAWIAN YOUTH AT HIGH RISK OF THROAT CANCER

By Gerald Musambazi Viyuyi

Non-Governmental Organization, Cancer Survivor Quest, has warned that a lot of Malawian youth are at a high risk of catching cancer and other ailments because of the spike in the number of young people engaged in drug and substance abuse.

The organization has said this as it is observing the Esophagus Cancer Awareness Month, this month.

Speaking to Timveni, Cancer Survivor Quest Executive Director Chikhulupiriro Ng’ombe said peer pressure is leading to drug and substance abuse and excessive smoking.

He says these behaviours are the main contributing factors to throat cancer which continues to claim a lot of lives dominated by the youth in the country.

Ng’ombe has therefore appealed to the youth to refrain from the behaviours to prevent premature deaths among the youth.

He has also urged government to open more cancer screening sites for early detections.
