TOBACCO AUCTION SUFFERS HIGH REJECTION RATE

Jecina Chikwelete

Tobacco Association of Malawi has expressed fears that this year’s tobacco marketing season will only benefit farmers under contract farming.

Speaking with Timveni, TAMA president Abel Katsache Banda based his worry on high rejection rate of tobacco for farmers on auction system.

According to Katsache Banda, there are few companies to take on board every farmer under contract farming.

Katsache Banda is of the view that one reason of high rejection rate of tobacco that is put on auction is due to America’s ban on Malawi tobacco due to bad record on child and forced labor.

The tobacco marketing season was officially opened on 20th April 2021.
