WATERAID WARNS OF INCREASING CASES OF CHOLERA ACROSS THE SADC REGION

By Meclina Chirwa

Water Aid has urged countries in the SADC region to address the underlying cause of cholera to prevent the situation from worsening across the affected nations.

The regional Director of WaterAid, Robert Kampala highlighted that while Zambia is currently grappling with its most severe outbreak since 2017, cases have already been reported in other countries such as Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, and South Africa.

The Ministry of Health has reported a total of 47 cholera cases, resulting in two deaths, since the onset of the 2023-2024 rainy season.

However, the government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, has recently announced plans to expand access to free water connections, with a particular focus on areas that are vulnerable to waterborne diseases like cholera.
