WILDLIFE CRIME INCREASE AMONG THE YOUTH

By Aamon Butao

Lack of employment and high poverty levels among the youth have been pointed out as the major cause of wildlife crimes, especially pangolin smuggling in the country.

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks Director Brighton Kumchedwa has said this in an interview with Timveni Online as more young people are being arrested due to the malpractice.

Kumchedwa said the those found in the wrong are in the age range of 20 to 40 years.

According to Kumchedwa, most of the youth do not have anything to do therefore they are forced to venture into the illegal business of pangolin smuggling.

He added that more arrests have been made this year as compared to last year with 26 people in the cooler.

14 Pangolins have been recovered from January to March this year.

At the same time last year, 18 people were arrested with 6 pangolins recovered.

Kumchedwa said this entails that more efforts are being made to protect the endangered species.
