YOUTH TIPPED ON BUSH FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES

By Wilson Allan Phiri

The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources says youths must lead the rest of the pack in bush fire prevention measures as Malawi enters fire season.

The department’s spokesperson Gift Chimulu noted that being amongst the highest labor force in agriculture; youths have a commanding voice to address bush fires most of which are started deliberately.

In an interview with Timveni, Chimulu said, "The appeal could not have come at a critical time when farmers will be preparing fields for the upcoming farming season."

The farming activity is associated with bush burning; something which Chimulu said has compromised Climate Change mitigation and adaptation globally.

Meanwhile, during the 2020/2021 national forestry season, the country planted about 56 million trees whose survival is heavily dependent on meeting restoration efforts including addressing bush and forest fires.
